Green Tea Diet and Exercise
Six Proven Benefits

What are the six proven benefits of combining green tea diet and exercise?

If you are on a diet plan, it is recommended that you do some physical activities. There are at least three reasons why this is good for you:

  • Burn More Calories

Whether you are walking or playing physical games, moving around help you burn more energy.

  • Boost Metabolism

Your body continues to burn more calories after you finish exercising for a period of time.

  • Increase Muscle Mass

The leaner you are, the more energy you burn every minute. This is because muscles experience much higher metabolism than fat tissues. This also explains why fat people are more likely to gain weight than slim people.

Two studies conducted by Kao Corporation in Japan found that combining green tea diet and exercise brings on further three benefits.

  • Improve Sport Performance

Drinking green tea can improve your endurance performance by up to 24%. This means you perform physical activities longer, allowing you to burn more energies and develop more muscle mass, making it easier for you to lose weight later.

  • Weight Maintenance

Combining green tea diet and exercise reduce weight gain on high fat diet by up to 90%. This means you are less likely to put on weight even you are on unhealthy diet.

  • Burn Visceral Fat

Green tea diet and exercise can help you lose visceral fat by up to 87%.

Study #1:
Improve Sport Performance

In the first study, researchers found that green tea’s fat burning property helps improve endurance level of athletes.

green tea diet and exerciseLaboratory rats were given green tea extract to drink for 10 weeks. Researchers found that this increases the amount of time the animals could swim before becoming exhausted by 8% to 24%.

When you exercise, your muscles get their energy from carbohydrates, fats or proteins. The proportions vary depending on what exercise you do and how fit you are.

Using carbohydrate as an energy source is undesirable because it causes your body to secret insulin, which suppresses fat burning and stimulates lactic acid. Lactic acid builds up and causes muscle ache.

Researchers found that green tea catechins such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) burn fat and reduce carbohydrates utilization.

This suppresses lactic acid and spares glycogen, a form of carbohydrate that is stored for ready access in muscle.

It was found that for green tea to be effective, it has to be taken daily over the full 10 weeks of the study.

The researchers estimate that a 165 pounds (75 kilograms) athlete would need to drink about 4 cups of green tea a day.

Another 2017 study conducted by Liaoning Normal University of China echoed the finding 12 years later. Mice were given EGCG supplement for 28 days. Those that consumed more EGCG were found to swim longer and showed less signs of fatigue. To quote the researcher:

"In this study, the data showed that EGCG significantly increased liver and muscle glycogen contents of mice, which indicated that EGCG could enhance exercise tolerance."

"The present results further suppor EGCG had anti-fatigue effects in dose-dependent manner and at the dose of 200mg/kg exhibited optimal effect."

Study #2:
Burn Visceral Fat

In the second study, researchers found that combining green tea diet and exercise can help you lose weight effectively. Laboratory mice ate either low or high fat food. They either drank green tea extract or ran on a treadmill or both.

Researchers found that mice that exercised regularly lost 24% of additional weight gain introduced by the high fat diet. Mice that drank green tea lost 47%. Mice that exercised AND drank green tea lost 89%!

It was found that green tea was particularly good at burning visceral fat. Visceral fat is a particular harmful kind of fat and is linked to metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.

Regular exercise alone reduces visceral fat accumulation by 37%. Green tea alone reduces visceral fat by 58%. Regular exercise AND green tea in combination reduce visceral fat by 87%!

It was found that mice that exercised and drank green tea burned the most energy and fat even when they were resting. Mice that drank green tea also burned more fat during exercise.

Surprisingly, the study shows that drinking green tea alone helps lose more fat and weight than exercising would alone.
