Mint Green Tea & Chest Pain. I'm not kidding!

by Kim
(PA)

I recently began drinking mint green tea and ended up in the ER with chest pain. After a full battery of tests I was sent home and the pain came back. I then realized that I have had food cause serious chest pain in the past so I decided to stop drinking the tea.

The pain went away. I tried it again, it came back. I did this just to prove that it was indeed the mint green tea. I realize this may be a severe and/or isolated case, but I wanted to post it in case someone else were to experience the same thing. I get the same reaction from drinking Merlot and wine coolers.

I understand this is a site promoting green tea, so I can understand why people would down you for your comment. However, I came to this site because I typed in "green tea and heart pain." I've been experiencing the same thing today. I do believe ours are isolated cases, though, because I do know that green tea is generally safe and very healthy and healing, which is exactly why I decided to drink a cup this morning. The heart palpitations and pain started within 30 minutes and still hasn't subsided. I'm drinking plenty of water to try to flush it out of my system. I would also like to mention that I am very healthy. I know it was the green tea. It's unfortunate that our bodies had a negative reaction.

Hello Anonymous,

Absolutely nobody wants to down you, or anybody else.

But, if you take green tea and/or mint tea for many, many years and never ever see a doctor, you just think green tea or mint tea might be a healthy choice.

It is true as I have taking heavy quantity (one glass daily) of Green tea regular from three four days then I feel chest pain. I don't understand why this is happening but I think it's all about from Green tea.

Scary chest pain from Rishi Jasmine tea
by: Anonymous

I have been drinking Jasmine Green Tea daily for years and no problem. Then recently I switched to another brand manufactured in the USA but harvested from China instead of the one I had been drinking that was harvested from Japan. I switched (just to be on the safe side) because of the Fukashima plant's ongoing leakage problem. I've had other brands before that were probably from China and no problem.

This new tea is very delicious tasting but I had some strong chest pain from it. I began to feel weak and was concerned my heart was having problems. Even my walking became unsteady. I tried to think if I was doing anything different? Yes, there was the new brand of Jasmine Tea. So I quit it and started getting better within 24 hours and continued getting better over the next few days and am now fully recovered.

I would love to submit it for chemical testing somewhere. Could it be an environmental problem in the area where it was harvested from?? I will contact the company and let them know.

It’s true!

I experienced the same thing this morning. Normally I’m fine with green tea/mint green tea. I’ve been drinking tea for many years. However this morning my husband brought me mint green tea from Starbucks and my chest and heart stared to hurt 10 minutes afterwards. I took another sip and the pain started immediately!

Yes Its True
by: Anonymous

Same happen with me but for me mild chest pain was regular for 24 hours it was very like gastric one(burping or fart gave me a bit relaxation in pain) and i'm very sure this was because of green tea since after i left drinking green tea with a week i had no pain. and to cross verify i did try again after a long gap and still suffered the same.

Chest Pain and Green Tea
by: Anonymous

I normally drink Green tea from starbucks or I drink the Matcha Green Tea by mighty leaf. I have not really had any in weeks so Monday I started back drinking green tea, but it is the Kroger brand, which I had before now without issue. Now all of a sudden yesterday and today within about 30 mins of drinking it I am having really painful chest pains and just like another person said, burping provides relief but that pain was scary. Tomorrow I am going to try my Might leaf organic matcha singles again and see if I have the same issue. Probably just going to go back to black coffee to be safe.

Absolutely true
by: Anonymous

I’ve started a new job and they provide free speciality teas. So, I’ve started drinking mint tea in the afternoon (to cut down on my coffee intake) and I’ve started having mysterious bursts of intense chest pain. I’m only 28 so I put it down to stress/ indigestion. However, I then started seeing a pattern in that any day I didn’t drink the mint tea I was fine and any day I drank more than 1 cup I had the pain, almost without fail. It only seems to happen with mint tea for me.

Same!

Experiencing chest pain for multiple days in a row due to green tea. You are not alone! I'm not concerned, but I think I will not bee drinking this pound of tea but instead turning it into kombucha which does not seem to cause the same problem.

Drinking Matcha Latte, Heart feels being pushed
by: Anonymous

Yeah me too, i don't know why. I've been trying to deny it but i think it gets worse... like just 5 seconds after, i started to feel it. My father has a heart disease, that's why I started drinking Matcha Latte (made with Ito-En Matcha powder). Is there a doctor that could explain.

Thanks!

Same problem
by: Peter

Noticed the same pattern, googled to find info but can't really find much other than this thread.
Tea seems to give me chest pains, I originally thought it was only green tea but I'm writing this now with chest pains after eating a cake that has ground black tea as a main ingredient :-(.

Well, me too.
by: Anonymous

I ended up here because I googled green tea and heart pain, too. For me, it's more like pressure, and I don't feel like I can get a full breath. It's scary! It was going on for weeks. I ran out of green tea two days ago, and just noticed that I feel normal. Then it occurred to me that this problem started just when I began drinking green mint tea.

chest pain drinking matcha green tea
by: Jenna

sso i went to the ER 7 days ago becoz of chest pain that sort of lingered around for almost 2 wks and then only thing ive been doin lately is i ordered matcha from amazon and had followed a smoothie recipe that required 2-3 tablespoons (not teaspoons). i couldn't finish it but im sure i shocked my body with it. the pain is shortness of breath and tightness, crackling, high blood pressure off n on, palpitations. symptoms just made me panic more. ER test came back good, no covid, and ruled out as anxiety. sent home and only thing that help was a cbd edible 3mg. i believe something is going in with the tea leafs being sold. as ive never felt this w green teas, or matcha lattes before. its that or ive, lile some other folks, have reacted to its properties. i will refrain from using it and hope it subsides bas it seems to subside super slowly. i alse read high amount can hurt liver. so yes this is obvoou5 a real thing with little info on google.

It's True!! Unfortunately I guess I am not alone!
by: Anonymous

Like everyone else, I have been drinking tea periodically along with coffee and sodas for MANY years. In August, I drank some green tea and about 2 hours later I thought I was having a heart attack due to the pain in my chest as it was also shooting through my left arm. Lasted about 3 minutes but seemed longer. I didn't tell my family until after because I did not want to alarm them.

Fast forward a week later, my daughter bought some bubble tea drink and I took a sip of it. Later that night I had the same pain again! I took myself to the ER and actually stayed overnight for observations. Before being admitted, the nurse mentioned that she had similar pain when she drank some green tea in Japan! It didn't dawn on me at that time that it was the teas. All tests came back negative for my heart and I was discharged with some heart burn medicine.

I avoided teas but must have eaten a pastry with tea in it and the pain was pretty bad. As I write this please Google-Agina. My wife saw a poster when she was at her doctor's office and told me to Google it. This may be the medical term for what we are going through. Unfortunately, I think any herbal teas will not be in my future. Stay safe!

Chest Pains
by: Anonymous

I converted to tea from coffee a few months ago. Recently, I began to focus on green tea. I like to keep my caffeine low so I drink a half caf/half decaf green tea blend (1/2 decaf green tea + 1/2 bancha green tea). During this time, I noticed strange chest discomforts... tightness, pressure...classic heart problem symptoms. Since I've had elevated cholesterol the last 2 years, I thought maybe I was getting clogged arteries or something. So I talked my doctor into getting me a CT angio scan. Just got the results, zero clogged arteries. So it made me wonder why the chest pains...then it hit me...all that tea...especially green tea. My green tea did give both me and husband nausea but perhaps it's also giving me chest pains??? I have stopped the green tea for a bit and actually feel better. I drank some decaf black tea recently and felt ok.

I recently ordered Green Tea from Amazon and I started with one cup a day. Increased to 2 cups per day. Started noticing a slight intermittent pain on the left side of my chest. Needless to say I’m done with the tea and will be sticking with water.

Same issue just started recently
by: Robert Frailey

I drink large amounts of lemon tea made by coca cola, they stopped production during covid and I could not find it. Bought 5 liters last week, i drank half a liter one Friday evening and hours later had massive pressure middle of my chest, very uncomfortable but no other issues associated with heart attack. took aspirin and tums, issue resolved in a few hours. didn't associate it with the tea at that time, last weekend drank about a glass and immediately had same symptoms> Monday decided to test this theory and being a glutton for punishment tried another glass, exact same symptoms. No more of that particular tea that I love for me, having covid may have made a change in my system. Also it's not caffeine, I still drink a pot of coffee every day, no issues.

Mother Nature
by: Léon

If I walk more than 10 kilometres, my muscles ache. Is it unhealthy to walk more than 10 kilometres?

Tea is number 2 in the world after water.

Green and white teas are the varieties closest to Mother Nature.

You can easily grow mint yourself. Do it!

So, if you experience complaints after drinking green mint tea (in Morocco they drink green mint tea all day long, even with large quantities of sugar that we consider unhealthy), think about your own lifestyle.

Many complaints that are not congenital can be traced back to one's own lifestyle. This is what I call "freedom".

Personally, I find tea (in all its forms) about the healthiest gift of Mother Nature I know. For me, there are no consumption limits when it comes to tea.

All day long!

I’ve been drinking green tea for a while, normally Sencha with no problems. I recently purchased a new type of green tea which smelt amazing, I had a few cups and then the following day I started to get dull chest pains on the left side of my chest. I got super worried and thought it could be heart related as my diet hadn’t been the best over the last few weeks. The next day it was ok, I had a big cup in the evening and then the pain came and went over the course of the next day!

The following day was a lot better, I’m going to try a week without it but at this point I’m sure this is the cause. It seems too much of a coincidence.

Spearmint tea and chest pain NEW
by: Anonymous

I wish I had seen these comments before buying spearmint tea leaves (which I was trying for the first time from amazon - a purchase not related to this website)! I'm 30, healthy and drank a total of two cups of spearmint tea on two different days. The third and fourth day (not drinking tea these days) I had chest tightness, difficulty getting a deep breath and radiating pain down my left arm and hand. I thought I was having a heart attack! I'm beyond grateful for everyone's comments as they helped me realize that the tea was the culprit.

Healthy and in my early 20s, never had chest pain before, I'm not sensitive to caffeine (I can drink coffee and soda with no ill effects).
Recently been having horrible check pains/tightness, dizziness, heart palpitations. I even went to the Dr and she did EKG & blood work - only thing that was wrong is my potassium was slightly low. I started supplementing potassium right after that.
Had one day where I didn't get a chance to eat much but I had a ton of mint green tea - that night at work I was dizzy with horrible chest pains - when I got home I put on my apple watch & it said my heartrate was 40 (I baseline around 75 resting) and my bp was lower than usual too.
Didn't realize it until tonight when I had green tea again and the chest tightness started that it could be related. Google search brought me to this thread. I will most definitely be stopping the mint green tea intake.
I'm not saying I think green tea is bad - I know its highly consumed - but I can't help but wonder if something is wrong with the processing of it for retail in some brands after reading this thread. The brand I drink (or drank, I guess) is Ahmad Tea
