Shogun Green Tea Tablets
Versus Cup Of Tea And Salad?
Chew Shogun green tea help you clean your teeth and lose weight? We don’t think so!
According to the Green Foods website, manufacturer of Shogun Green Tea:
Shogun
Imperial Green Tea is a chewable tablet form of green tea that offers
superior nutrition because it contains a tablet form of very finely
ground whole green tea leaves.
In this manner, all the nutrients in the original green
tea leaves are made available for absorption and utilization by the
body.
Matcha is a powdered form of green tea traditionally used in the Japanese Tea Ceremony.
It retains the vivid green
color that is often lost when the tea leaves are exposed to oxygen.
Matcha is used in green tea ice cream and smoothies and gives these products their distinct green color.
Shogun Imperial Green Tea Tabs are the made in much the same manner as Matcha.
Japanese research pharmacist, Dr. Ohmura, developed and patented his
method of turning the ground green tea leaves into a soft, chewable
tablet that can either be taken in tablet form or dissolved in hot
water and enjoyed as a tea.
What They Haven't Told You
However, there is one problem.
Green tea chlorophyll and catechins are extremely sensitive to
oxidation. Most matchas expire within 6 months from the date of
manufacture.
This can be extended, but the product needs to be kept under constant refrigeration.
Each serving of 6 tablets contain:
-
Catechins 110 mg
-
Chlorophyll 6 mg
-
Caffeine 15 mg
-
Chewing the Shogun Green Tea Tablets helps with oral health and acts as a natural breath freshener.
-
Easy to use – swallow or chew the tabs when it is convenient.
-
Low in caffeine, so no unpleasant side effects should be noticed even by sensitive users.
-
Contains theanine – an amino acid that works as a natural relaxant and helps offset any side effects from caffeine intake.
-
Shogun Green Tea Tablets are organic and free of herbicides or pesticides.
Serving size of 6 tablets provides only 110 milligrams of catechins
and 6 milligrams of chlorophyll – not high enough levels of either to
make a significant difference to overall general health or weight loss.
To put this into perspective, according to the 2007 USDA Study, 1 gram of green tea leaves brewed in 100 millimeters of hot water contains 127 milligrams of catechins.
Put another way, 6 tablets
of the so called highly concentrated Shogun green tea tablets does not
contain enough catechins to rival that of one gram of green tea leaves.
In addition, you might find it useful to know that half a cup of raw spinach contains as much as 300 milligrams of chlorophyll, much more than the 6 grams found in one serving of Shogun.
The levels of theanine are not documented, so it is unclear whether the tablets contain enough to be considered a natural relaxant.
The low catechin level of Shogun Imperial Green Tea Tabs makes this
product somewhat suspect on how well it will perform as a weight loss
enhancer. However, if viewed as a breath freshener, this product is a
good choice.
However, if consuming high levels of catechins and chlorophyll is
your goals, you are far better off drinking a high quality loose green
tea and eating spinach than chewing Shogun Green Tea tablets.
