Milk Thistle Side Effects
Or Detox Symptoms?
There are a few milk thistle side effects that you should be aware of. However, such symptoms could be a sign of detoxification.
As for the side effects of milk thistle, there are none for the majority of people that use it. The herb itself is nontoxic.
However, because milk thistle is an herb that can foster removal of chemicals from the liver, it’s not recommended to use during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
In some cases, people who rarely have regular bowel movements can have abdominal pain, bloating or gas after taking milk thistle.
This type of reaction is a signal to the person that the herb is attempting to speed up digestion and the transit time in the colon. Once the person has several bowel movements, this should clear up.
Many people mistakenly believe that if they get these symptoms, the herb is to blame. However, the problem lies with the person’s body accumulating high amounts of waste matter, and not the herb.
Similarly, there are reports on the internet about allergies being caused by milk thistle. Again, this is rare.
From the perspective of natural healing, a person that is sensitive to allergens is always someone who has accumulated toxins in the liver that have not been detoxified. By adding milk thistle to the diet, this begins the detoxification process.
However, if the colon cannot accept additional toxins because the person does not have regular bowel movements, then the liver’s additional waste products try to escape through the skin. A rash may break out.
It’s important to note that if a rash does break out, it’s not necessarily due to a sensitivity to milk thistle.
