Jasmine Scented Tea and Breastfeeding

I would like to give a gift of Jasmine flower tea to my daughter to celebrate the birth of her daughter, Jasmine, but am concerned about the possible effects of jasmine flower tea during breastfeeding.

Answer:

Hey, most jasmine teas we talk about are green teas that have been scented with jasmine. So they would contain caffeine and will not be appropriate for a breastfeeding woman.

If the tea you talk about is pure jasmine flower i.e. does not contain any green tea - that it will be okay, as it wouldn't contain any caffeine.

I hope this helps.

Neither jasmine nor green tea recommended

I would recommend staying away from both jasmine and green tea.

- Jasmine: Jasmine has been used for ages in India to reduce the flow of breastmilk. There is also some recent scientific evidence that use of the flower does reduce milk production.

- Green tea: Green tea counteracts folic acid, the vitamin that pregnant women are encouraged to take to prevent birth defects. It is also not recommended during breastfeeding, but this is not simply due to the caffeine (which is okay in small amounts).

Hope this helps!
