Green Tea With Lemon - Increase Antioxidants Benefits

by Julian

15 Nov 2007 - Drinking green tea with lemon juice might boost their mutual health benefits.

Green tea has certain antioxidants or disease fighting properties. Juices of lemon, orange, lime and grapefruit enable these antioxidants to remain after digestion making the pairing even healthier than previously thought, the scientists fund.

Researchers at Purdue University compared the effect of various beverage additives including juices and creamers on catechins, naturally occurring antioxidants found in tea.

They found that drinking green tea with lemon juices or vitamin C increases the amount of catechins available for the body to absorb, reported health portal Medical News Today.

Catechins display health-promoting qualities and may be responsible for some of green tea's reported health benefits, like reducing risk of cancer, heart attack and stroke.

The problem, the scientists said, is that catechins are relatively unstable in non-acidic environments such as the intestines, and less than 20 percent of the total remains after digestion.

Citrus juices enable these antioxidants to remain after digestion. The study found that lemon juice in particular caused 80 percent of tea's catechins to remain. Following lemon, in terms of stabilising power, were orange, lime and grapefruit juices.

How much lemon juice to one cup of green tea beverage?
by: Prof.V.G.Krishnamurthy

Please refer to the following portion of your article:

Researchers at Purdue University compared the effect of various beverage additives including juices and creamers on catechins, naturally occurring antioxidants found in tea.

They found that drinking green tea with lemon juices or vitamin C increases the amount of catechins available for the body to absorb, reported health portal Medical News Today.

Now, I have a few questions in this regard:

1. Can you send me the full article for my review / reference?

2. Will you please let me know as how much lemon juice to be added to one cup(150ml)of Green tea beverage?

3. In case of lemon fruit powder extract, how many grams to be added to one cup(150ml)of Green tea beverage?

4. Is there any difference in the quantity of lemon juice / lemon juice powder for the green tea beverage prepared with green tea leaves and green tea extract powder?

5. For some people, lemon juice is allergic. In that case, what is the alternate for them, in this regard.

I read in some articles that both vitamin C & E can enhance the absorption of EGCG in humans. If you know something about this, please share that with me.

Looking forward to your early response,

I have searched everywhere for this information, too. I cannot find any reference to the amounts, which seems critical to the sharing of the information.

And since adding lemon directly to the green tea completely changes the flavor, I would also like to know how much time you can have between ingesting the two; a glass of lemon water while the tea is brewing, then the glass of tea?

lemon juice in green tea, amounts
by: Anonymous

Perhaps it doesn't matter the amount, but only to acidify the tea. It doesn't take much lemon juice to acidify tea. I'm in the habit of combining three cups of green tea with one cup of water to fill a quart drinking container, and into this I squeeze the juice of half a lemon, and this makes the tea super lemony and very acidic.

Why wait for a specific amount? Just do it and listen to you body's response.

peace out

Look at the conference abstract at:

http://www.fasebj.org/cgi/content/meeting_abstract/22/1_MeetingAbstracts/701.3

They used ascorbic acid (vitamin C) in the amount of 10 mg. I doubt that this amount of acid would change the acidity of the tea entering the intestine because the stomach acid levels are so high. They also added sucrose.

Someone gave me this recipe-

Boil 4 cups water.
Turn stove off and add 4 greentea tea bags.
Let steep for 20 minutes.
Add juice of 1 fresh lemon.
Add sweetener to your taste.

Anyone hear about this one? Said she saw it on Dr. OZ but I can't find anything on it. Would like to know if that's right. Oh and your supposed to drink 4 or 8 glasses a day. I would like to know which.
