Breaking Health News!
A collection of headline news articles since 2007 about the benefits of drinking green tea.
Thousands of green tea studies are conducted each year. They tell us
about the amazing benefits of drinking green tea. Tracking these
exciting stories can be taxing. Why not let me do the hard work for you?
When you scan through the headlines of this page, you will begin a journey of discovery; a journey that will only get better.
You will witness, first hand, how industrialized man wakes up to the
magic of the second oldest and widely consumed beverage in the world -
after water.
18 December 2007, Green Tea Prevents Parkinson’s Disease
A study conducted on rats found that green tea prevented the breakdown of the nerve cells in the brain that are responsible for producing dopamine.
Dopamine is a brain chemical that coordinates body movement. As these cells deplete, sufferers of Parkinson’s disease find it increasingly difficult to carry out everyday activities such as walking, talking and eating.

6 December 2007, Green Tea Suppress Breast Cancer
Dr. Radha Maheshwari, professor of Pathology at the Uniformed
Services University of the Health Sciences (USU), and Rajesh Loganathan
Thangapazham, a graduate student, have shown that green tea has
antitumor effects in breast cancer cells.
Dr. Maheshwari discovered that green tea causes cancer cells to commit suicide, and blocks their growth.
The study will be published in the Journal of Cancer Biology and Therapy, December 2007, Volume 6, Issue 12.

8 November 2007, Green Tea Fight Severe Sepsis
Green tea could prove the perfect elixir for severe sepsis, an abnormal immune system response to a bacterial infection.
Researchers from The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research have
been studying the therapeutic powers of dozens of Chinese herbal
compounds in reversing this fatal immune response that kills 225,000
Americans every year.
They found that an ingredient in green tea rescued mice from lethal
sepsis – and the findings could pave the way to clinical trials in
patients.

1 August 2007, Green Tea Cut Fatal Lung Cancer Risk
Lung cancer is one of the most common diseases nowadays. With small-cell carcinoma (SCLC), you have the worst of the lot.
SCLC represents 15 to 20 percent of all lung cancer cases. It is so
fatal that more than 85 percent of patients die within 5 years.
A breakthrough study conducted by Dr. Sadava of Keck Science Center,
California, discovered that green tea antioxidant EGCG slows cancer
growth by enzyme telomerase.

25 June 2007, Green Tea and Colon Cancer
A 2007 Chinese study found that those who drink green tea drinker regularly are 37% less likely to suffer from colorectal cancers.
The study monitored 70,000 Chinese women aged 40 to 70 for 6 years.
Another 2007 American study discovered that drinking 4 to 6 cups of
green tea a day may dramatically reduce the risk of colorectal cancer
in humans.

31 May 2007, Green Tea Extract EGCG - Improves Blood Flow Or Not?
Many population studies have shown tea to be associated with improved endothelial function.
A study was jointly conducted by Michael Widlansky, from Boston
University School of Medicine, and DSM Nutritional Products, maker of
the Teavigo supplement.
Measurements were taken after an initial dose of EGCG (300
milligrams), 2 hours later, and after 2 weeks of supplementation with
EGCG (two 150 milligrams per day).
EGCG was found to improve blood flow, or Flow Mediated Dilation
(FMD), by 21% 2 hours after the initial 300 milligram dose. However,
similar improvements were not observed after the end of the 2 week
period.

21 May 2007, Green Tea Treat Inflammatory Bladder Disease
Roughly ten million American adults have problems controlling their
bladders. Bladder disease affects both men and women and can comprise
incontinence or interstitial cystitis, a chronic inflammatory state
that causes recurrent, urgent and painful urination and pelvic
discomfort.
"We discovered that catechins found in green tea protected both
normal and cancerous bladder cells from inflammation when we exposed
the cells to hydrogen peroxide."
"Although further studies are needed, these results indicate herbal
supplements from green tea could be a treatment option for various
bladder conditions that are caused by injury or inflammation," said
Michael B. Chancellor, M.D., professor of urology and gynaecology at
the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.

23 April 2007, Green Tea Antioxidant - How Tunneling Fox Out Free Radicals
Scientists
have used quantum mechanics to work out why green tea is good for you.
The health benefits of the brew are all down to a quirk of the quantum
world known as tunneling, they say.
Ŕngels González-Lafont and colleagues at the Autonomous University
of Barcelona in Spain have modeled the chemical reaction that allows
green tea catechins to zap free radicals.
The reaction involves the catechins losing a hydrogen atom to a
reactive free radical. The scientists found that in this process the
radical and catechins were bound together tightly, leading to very
small energy changes as the reaction proceeds.
Tunneling makes the hydrogen transfer much faster than the free
radical's reaction with the body's vulnerable lipids, so the radicals
are trapped before they can do harm.
'It is really astounding what this [research] has done for the rest
of us,' said Vinson. 'We had a problem understanding how polyphenols
work at such low concentrations.'
'This paper gives theoretical credence to a large amount of
experimental evidence of polyphenols as in vitro and in vivo
antioxidants.'

19 April 2007, Green Tea And Dry Mouth - A Cure For Autoimmune Disease?
Autoimmune disease affects 30 percent of elderly Americans. It can
be caused by certain drugs, radiation and other diseases. In contrast,
only about 5 percent of the elderly in China suffer from dry mouth.
Dr. Stephen Hsu from the Medical College of Georgia School of Dentistry said:
“Since it is an autoimmune disease, Sjogren’s Syndrome causes the
body to attack itself and produce extra antibodies that mistakenly
target the salivary and lacrimal glands.”
However, Dr. Hsu said that green tea drinkers had significantly
fewer lymphocytes and auto-antibodies, which are protein weapons
produced when the immune system attacks itself.
The results indicate that green tea reduced the inflammation, as many other studies have found.

23 March 2007, Green Tea Fight HIV
Researchers found a compound in the tea stops the HIV virus binding to cells in the immune system.
Professor Mike Williamson, of Sheffield University, said: "It could
reduce the risk of infection and help slow the spread of HIV."
But he added: "It is not a cure or safe way to avoid infection. It could be used to improve quality of life for those infected."
