Greeting,

This newsletter features the most famous of oolong tea plants: Ti Kwan Yin tea.

It is known by many names: Tieguanyin, Tit Kwun Yum, Ti Kwan Yin and Iron Buddha. And more commonly - the Iron Goddess tea.

It is both a legend and an enigma.

It is a legend because it is the most popular of oolong tea. The tea now lends its name to the entire family of ball-shaped oolong tea made using the Southern Fujian style.

It is an enigma because of its wide availability. Alongside jasmine tea, it is one of two main Chinese restaurant teas.

It is so widely available that people often question its quality.

It is the same tea plant, but the difference between a high and low grade is like heaven and earth.

Why?

Because a low grade is planted in low lying area and harvested 5 times a year.

It is then mass-processed using machines.

A high grade (called Ti Kwan Yin Wang) grows slowly at high altitude and is only harvested 2 times a year.

Wang means King.

High grade is rare. Shen's King grade is made from the best 0.1% tea leaves.

They are handpicked and handcrafted with extreme care.

If you have recently bought his tea, please consider feeding back. There is a prize for the most informative post (see tea contest below).

I hope you will enjoy the read.

Have a great Christmas and New Year,

Julian Tai
